Totii Gate Ornament

What is a "Torii (鳥居)"?

 A Torii is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of Shinto shrines.
It marks the boundary between the ordinary world and the sacred space of the shrine.

 The structure usually consists of two upright posts and two horizontal beams.
 Many Torii are painted in bright vermilion red(*Urushi Lacquer*), while others are left in natural wood or made of stone.

 Passing through a Torii means you are entering a place where people come to pray to the gods (called kami in Japanese).
 It is a sign of respect and a way to prepare your heart before entering the spiritual area.

 Torii can be found in many parts of Japan, from small countryside shrines to famous places like Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, where thousands of red Torii line the mountain path.

* *What is Urushi Lacquer?

 This torii gate ornament is finished with real Japanese urushi lacquer, a traditional technique that has been used for over a thousand years.

 Unlike modern paint, urushi is made from natural tree sap, and applying it takes time, patience, and expert skill.
 Each piece is coated by hand in multiple layers—sometimes more than ten—then carefully polished between coats.

 The result is a surface with a deep, rich shine and a luxurious texture that synthetic materials simply cannot match.
 It ages beautifully over time, gaining character and depth—just like fine wood or leather.

 Owning a piece with urushi lacquer is like having a small work of Japanese art in your home.
